There was a brief, shining moment there where it looked as if Mitt Romney and the GOP would be satisfied with a single graceful and well-mannered concession speech deep in the evening of November 6th, 2012. No such luck. A week later both Romney and running mate Paul Ryan are calling for the wammmmbulance in the press because they were so sure they would win- and they would have too, if it wasn’t for those pesky kids, Urbans, Hispanics and better organized Democrats giving out presents like some kind of downtown Santa Claus.
For Ryan, his road to the White House was detoured by the sheer audacity of “The Urbans” showing up to the polls despite Republican attempts to discourage and disenfranchise lower income voters, not the wrongly weighted polls that the Romney/ Ryan campaign relied upon.
“I think the surprise was some of the turnout, especially in urban areas, which gave President Obama the big margin to win this race,” Ryan told CBS’s Jessica Arp on November 14th, 2012, gracelessly bringing race into the conversation. “”I don’t think we lost it on those budget issues, especially on Medicare – we clearly didn’t lose it on those issues.”
That’s right, Paul. You and Romney lost because of the amount of melanin in the voter’s skins as it pertained to President Obama; not because Romney believed that long term care for the poor from the ER was a viable healthcare choice, or supported the notion that rape was just another conception method, the sheer gaul for some lower income families to want their children to eat every single day, whether a woman had individual rights rather than being an incubator with legs or whether two men can have a tasteful, legal marriage ceremony that was recognised by the State.
This election was all about lots of pigmented people being mean to the two white guys. Or as lobbyist Grover Norquist put it, Obama successfully calling Romney a “poopyhead.”
Next it was Romney’s turn; in a phone call to larger campaign donors (the ones who had raised a total of $900 M for his losing campaign) Romney attributed his loss to Democrats offering “extensive gifts” to voters.
Which gifts are these? Not the mythical phones that FOX News insisted existed; not even cold hard cash. Nope, these were the “gifts” of partial forgiveness for student loans, affordable contraception, a workable immigration policy rather than self-deportation, insurance for the under 26’s and universal healthcare. What a bribe; basic human needs within a civilized society.
Of course, Romney had “gifts” he wished to bestow too were he elected, just not to the everyday American on the street. He wanted to vastly expand military spending, even though the Pentagon were doing just fine with what they had, thank you very much.
He wanted tax breaks for corporations, who are people too, my friend.
Romney wanted not only a continuation of the Bush tax cuts, but an expansion of them, especially for the top tax “job creators,” even though there has been no causal link between tax cuts for the wealthy and economic expansion in the US since World War II, according to a Congressional Research Service study of the past 65 years.
Last but certainly not least, Mitt really wanted to bestow the “gift” of forcing of religious beliefs into secular legislation when it came to reproductive and marriage equality rights in return for Billy Graham taking Mormons off his cult list so he could nab the Evangelical vote.
Inside the Republican bubble, when Mitt promises a situation conducive for a minority, like the 26.3% of Americans who consider themselves Evangelical, or the 3% of the population who make over $250,000/year it’s just good common sense, but when horrible, socialist, community organizing Obama proposes a situation better for the 97%, THAT IS AN EGREGIOUS BRIBE!!! Or at least so it goes in the blonde haired, blue-eyed world of Mitt Romney.
Take Universal Healthcare, or as the Republicans are still calling it, Obamacare, for instance. There is a way to measure just where we as a nation stack up in comparison to the world in terms of Healthcare that has nothing to do with dollars or cents and everything to do with common sense; the infant mortality rate.
This metric should appeal to either side of the aisle, but especially Republicans, as it seems that almost every ridiculous position on rape this election cycle was excused and supported by breathlessly asking “But what about the babies? Won’t you think of the dear, innocent babies?”
OK, let’s, talk about the babies!
In the CIA World Factbook under Global Infant Mortality Rate, it states “This entry gives the number of deaths of infants under one year old in a given year per 1,000 live births in the same year; included is the total death rate, and deaths by sex, male and female. This rate is often used as an indicator of the level of health in a country.”
Out of 223 countries, the US comes in at 173rd – that means that there are 50 countries ahead of us, over half of which have Universal Healthcare, meaning that a certain amount of the public funds collected by taxation is allotted to the public health- running of hospitals, payment of doctors, acquiring and distributing pharmaceuticals on a fair and equitable basis, available to all citizen, regardless of class or earning capability. In most Universal Healthcare systems, one can, if one chooses, pay extra to go to what may or may not be a higher level of healthcare than is offered on the national healthcare system; as a citizen, no-one is “stuck” with a doctor or health care regimen.
Without Universal Healthcare, the US is in the company of countries like Hungary, the Czech Republic, Italy, Malta, French Polynesia and Belarus. Just to be clear, these are countries that have better infant mortality rates than the US- each of these countries has less than 6 babies per 1000 die needlessly due to lack of healthcare. Yet in Mitt Romney’s eyes, this Universal Healthcare thing-a-ma-jiggy constitutes a electoral bribe and stinks of socialism, perhaps even communism.
How do you explain to someone who seeks to codify the sanctity of the life and personhood of an unborn child, but then ignores the child once it is born what the difference is between a bribe and what you do as a civilized nation? The answer is, sadly, we can’t. Sometimes, there are those who have eyes but will not see, who have ears but will not hear.
In Mittland, Romney didn’t lose because his ideas were so far to the Right; when you could nail them down that is; or that too many people in this country decided that they could not, in good conscience, have Romney in charge of their country for the next four or even eight years.
Romney lost because of nasty, underhanded socialist bribes to underclass takers who, with their idiot, unwashed hands perpetually thrust out to the State, weren’t smart enough to hand the reigns over to Romney, so Romney could hand those reigns almost immediately over to the Captains of Industry and the Republican demigod of the Free Market.
Going forward, Paul Ryan and his odd goofy grin will be fine; he still has his seat in the House where he can continue to churn out mathematically impossible budgets.
Please, don’t spare a thought about Mitt either; he still has his car elevator, dancing horses, and apparently healthy sense of hubris to keep him company in defeat.
